A desire line is an informal path worn down by foot traffic resulting in a shortcut between two points where official pedestrian ways are inconvenient or simply don’t exist. For this project, I created a temporary crosswalk (bisecting 6th Street between Broadway and Spring in downtown L.A.) to protect pedestrians who take a popular shortcut from the front door of their residence to the convenience store and burger joint located directly across the street. By stepping in baby powder and repeatedly jaywalking back and forth, I created two white lines across the middle of 6th Street that served as a makeshift crosswalk before it was eventually erased by the tires of passing cars and buses.
This project was part of the Los Angeles Road Concerts' Day of Remembrance event. Read an article about this event (featuring the Desire Lines project) on Next City.
